The coronavirus can spread in open-plan offices with alarming speed, as the United States Health Department CDC summarises in a latest survey.
A recent incident in South Korea’s capital Seoul indicates how fast the coronavirus is able to spread through the room air at the workplace.
In an open-plan office with nearly 100 workplaces, a single employee tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infected more than 90 other colleagues and residents without having had direct personal contact with them.
Despite the employer reacting fast, more than 90 employees have become infected before the first incident was detected. Already on the next day, the entire high-rise building with more than 900 employees and 200 residents was closed by the responsible authority in order to interrupt the infection chains. However, it was already too late by then! 94 colleagues of the open-plan office and 3 residents of the skyscraper had already been infected with the coronavirus according to the CDC report.
The most important aspect: It can nearly be ruled out that the person who was tested positive first has had direct personal contact to all other infected persons (approx. 100 colleagues and residents). It can rather be assumed that coughed up aerosols or virus-laden aerosols emitted by talking have spread in the open-plan office or lift through the room air, whereupon they have been inhaled by other employees or residents. It is important to mention that wearing masks in offices is currently not mandatory which could at least reduce droplets and accumulations of aerosol.
