Out of the smoke: evacuation exercises on passenger ships

Using the fog and flue gas simulator FS200 from Trotec, sea crews can be trained for emergencies in a targeted manner.

Even if passenger ships are supposed to be an extremely secure means of transport, the preparation for an emergency must be taken seriously. International regulations drafted under the auspices of the United Nations require that sea crews must be trained for the case of an evacuation as part of the safety precautions. To practice for an emergency under realistic conditions, fog machines are used. The fog and flue gas simulator FS200 from Trotec is perfectly suited for such trainings.

Cruises are said to be extremely safe. Compared to other means of transport, incidents on passenger ships are very rare. This is for the most part due to the latest technology used and the extremely high safety standards applicable on passenger ships. To guarantee maximum security for passengers as well as the crew, operators of cruises and passenger ships are among other things obliged to carry out exercise and training programmes with the crew. This includes in particular evacuation exercises. During these exercises, particular attention is paid to one scenario: a fire below deck. Such a fire spreads in a completely different way than a fire inside a building or in the nature on shore. The priority is not to extinguish the flames but to evacuate the passengers.

Rapid smoke spread

The steel walls of a ship are heated up by the flames in a way that the fire can spread via thermal conduction. This is aggravated by the long corridors below deck and the numerous staircases and ventilation shafts causing a strong chimney effect in case of fire. The consequence: the fire and particularly the smoke spread at enormous speed below deck. Within a short period of time, the narrow ways are covered in thick smoke and visibility is often less than 30 centimetres. The sea crew must be prepared to evacuate a large number of passengers over narrow, long and in particular smoky corridors in poor visibility conditions.

Dense artificial smoke

To ideally prepare the staff for an emergency, artificial smoke should be applied for fire exercises below deck. The fog and flue gas simulator FS200 is a suitable partner for such cases. Owing to its extremely powerful fan turbine and the infinitely adjustable fluid pump, dense white smoke is produced in a matter of seconds. In next to no time, the respective area is covered in dense – and, of course, completely harmless – fog providing the same visibility conditions as during a fire below deck.

Compact power pack

To be able to prepare all corridors and staircases as quickly as possible for the fire exercise on the ship, the FS200 can be set up and put into operation without difficulty at different locations. Only a few steps are required to set up the compact power pack and put it into operation. Thanks to its compact dimensions and light weight, the professional fog and flue gas simulator can be transported quickly and without difficulty. This way, preparations are completed quickly and the crew can fully concentrate on the evacuation exercises.

  • Evacuation exercises in airplanes

Even if commercial aircrafts are manufactured in line with the latest standards nowadays, they are not immune to technical problems. In case of an incident, the on-flight crew must know exactly what to do to protect the passengers and themselves. The personnel is trained for such emergencies during special exercises. This includes evacuating passengers from a smoky aircraft in case of fire. A fog...

  • Evacuation exercises in trains

Whether a faulty air conditioning system, a damaged engine or a burning waste bin: usually, the cause for smoke development on a train is only identified after completion of the fire-fighting operation. Before that, it is important for the on-board staff to keep calm and evacuate the passengers. The personnel is prepared for the worst case during fire exercises. During such an exercise, the fog...

  • Storage tents/marquees

As opposed to conventional warehouses, marquees and large storage tents are erected quickly and at low cost. The only challenges in the face of buildings – even with insulated marquees – are condensation and humidity control. Stationary high-performance dryers with hose systems for a consistent supply of dry air prevent moisture problems in advance.
