In dry air storage: dehumidifying rather than heating

A dehumidification system is always less expensive than heating systems

TTR series: stationary and mobile solutions for dry air storage

The requirements in dry air storage are very much alike in many industries: Bacterial growth on foodstuffs, powders going lumpy, corrosion on metal parts – all can be prevented, when the relative humidity is constantly kept below 50 %. A value of 70 % RH suffices as mould protection. The dehumidifiers of the TTR series along with the matching data loggers represent dehumidification systems which reliably meet this target value for all sizes of warehouses and the hauling distance.

For keeping the humidity level in a dry storage facility constantly below 50 % of relative humidity, two options come to mind: First, you can ensure proper insulation and then provide energy-intensive heating. This can, however, not be realized for all warehouse sizes; nor is it always the reasonable thing to do. A more energy-saving and hence cost-efficient solution is the second option: the installation of a dehumidification system inside the dry storage facility. It constantly supplies the room with dry air and strips the inflowing humid air from water. A solution functioning throughout the year even in poorly insulated halls or tents. For dehumidification it is enough that the outer shell of the dry storage facility is diffusion-proof and the seals are impervious to smoke.

Dry air storage facilities can be found in various sectors and they exist in all sizes – ranging from room size to halls, silos or large marquees. Typical examples for dry air storage are the sugar silos in the food industry, PCB storage facilities in the electronics industry, raw materials warehouses in the production of chemicals, storage tents with defence technology in the field or car parts depots of automobile manufacturers. The desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR series, are suitable for all orders of magnitude, for they comprise both stationary and mobile devices of different performance classes. The stationary TTR desiccant dehumidifier are marked with 4-digit model numbers. Beginning with the TTR 800 the devices are also available with weather protection. This means they can be positioned outside the storage facility and still come with enough power to supply it with dry air and exhaust humid air from there via air hoses. The mobile TTR dryers bear 3-digit model numbers and are suited for flexible solutions in smaller dry storage facilities. Both – mobile and stationary dehumidifiers – are also available as stainless steel versions, e.g. for the application in food storage facilities. The TTR dehumidifiers from Trotec feature two separate air flows (TTR Trisorp Dual principle of operation) characterized by an especially simple adjustability. Moreover, with their internal heat recovery and the high level of resilience and performance of the special rotors they rank among the most economic units of their kind. Data loggers, such as the innovative DL200X, complete the dehumidification concept and enable constant monitoring.

To be considered from the outset: pre-drying hauling paths

The dehumidification of hauling paths and transfer sites should be included in the process of planning air dehumidification measures in dry air storage facilities. If you are dealing with hygroscopic materials such as salt, sugar, powdered instant beverages, chemicals, medication or propellants, a good dehumidification concept for dry air storage starts with the hauling paths. Pre-drying the conveying air of the pneumatic transport routes ensures that powders and granules arrive at the dry storage facility in a free-flowing state. For this application, as well, the desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR series are ideally suited.

Making use of expert knowledge with the Trotec industrial services team

The Trotec Group not only provides the desiccant dehumidifiers for dehumidification in dry air storage facilities and along hauling paths. The employees of the industrial services team also lend their support in planning the necessary capacity. Trotec further provides mobile dehumidifiers on loan to test the concept beforehand. Only after trial operation has proved that the humidity level remains below the target value of 50 % RH will your final solution be installed.

Upon request, we also produce customized desiccant dehumidifiers as special models

Upon request, we will readily produce tailor-made desiccant dehumidifiers as special models “made in Germany” perfectly geared to your needs, e.g.:

  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with hygienic design
  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers for PWIS-free dry air
  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with extremely low dew point

Makes use of the possibility of having special models with tailored components for your individual needs planned, designed and manufactured in close consultation with our specialists.

  • Dehumidification in fertilizer storage facilities

The production of hygroscopic materials in the chemical industry requires intuition and sure instincts. After all, the substances love water and readily absorb the moisture contained in the ambient air. And this can have disastrous economic consequences. As it binds water, the material starts sticking together and clumping, and may become unusable in the worst case. One example are fertilizers. If...

  • Dehumidification in wind turbine component depots

In the construction phase of a wind turbine, the plant’s components are sometimes stored for months in very large depots such as halls or temporary storage tents prior to assembly. To prevent damage caused by corrosion or frost during storage, a sophisticated system for humidity regulation is necessary.

  • Dehumidification of appliance rooms

Proper protective equipment and perfectly functioning devices are indispensable for operations by the fire brigade and the THW. Protective suits, hoses and tubes must be absolutely leakproof. Tools such as spreader forceps and bolt cutters have to be in an immaculate condition, just like technical devices such as high-performance fans, cutting torches and headlights. In order to store the whole...

  • Dehumidification in drying rooms

In the production of electronic equipment and semiconductors humidity can lead to electrostatic charge. For this reason, sensitive processing steps are being performed in cleanrooms and drying rooms. • Dehumidification dispatch & transport

In the silo as well as during transport hygroscopic bulk material is endangered by humidity – this holds true for both the chemical and the pharmaceutical industry. Humidity continues to be a problem after production, because the products are mostly packed into damageable cardboard boxes with paper inserts. Therefore, dehumidification also plays a key role for storage, dispatch and transport.

  • Dehumidification in timber yards

In the past, when storing wood it had been rather a challenge to keep the moisture of furniture wood below the required 9 per cent, for example: If no dehumidifiers are used, seasonal temperature differences and fluctuations in air humidity cause the wood moisture to rise. This considerably affects timber quality and results in problems during processing and even in reject.
