Optimum protection of plants: drying compressed air

Dehumidifiers dry machines and installations exposed to water vapour and thus ensure production reliability.

The most frequent causes for a production stop are too much water vapour in the machines and installations, and corrosion inside the pipelines. Therefore, too humid compressed air should be avoided by all means. An effective option is the use of high-performance dehumidifiers. The answer to the question of how dry the compressed air has to be in order to guarantee optimum production conditions and protection for machines and installations lies in the relative humidity. It must be reduced to less than 50 percent since corrosion is no longer to be expected within this range. Desiccant dehumidifiers from Trotec ensure effective and constant drying of compressed air.

Production stops entail extremely high costs. The company must try to avoid supply bottlenecks, pay their staff as well as specialists charged with extensive troubleshooting and, of course, bear the costs of repairing the damage. Particularly unexpected failures leading to a production stop must be avoided. Therefore, it is essential to maintain and protect the mechanical and electronic equipment of the machines and production facilities on a permanent basis in order to ensure failure-free continuous operation. Particular attention should be paid to the climatic conditions the machines and installations are exposed to – externally, but also internally.

Drying compressed air in a targeted way

Plant failures are often due to corrosion inside the pipeline system or an excessive amount of water vapour inside the machines and installations. Generally, the cause is too humid compressed air. Therefore, too high contents of water vapour must be avoided and the compressed air dehumidified. This requires the use of technology, as this is the only way to avoid permanent damage to the production facilities and downtimes. The desiccant dehumidifiers from Trotec do a competent job – powerful, effective and economical!

Relative humidity

When drying compressed air, there is one crucial question: how dry does it need to be? The answer sounds simple in the first instance: the relative humidity must be below 50 percent since corrosion can almost be ruled out in this range. By the way: The relative humidity level indicates to what degree the air is saturated with water vapour. Correspondingly, a relative humidity value of 50 percent means that the air only contains half the amount of water vapour which it could maximally contain at the respective temperature. If the temperature increases, the air can absorb more water vapour – until it is saturated 100 percent. Then, the dew point has been reached. As of this point the water vapour is given off as condensation. Condensation also forms when air rich in water vapour, i.e. humid air, is cooled down. Rule of thumb: the warmer the air, the more water vapour it can absorb.

The pressure dew point

The dew point serves as a humidity measure as it depends on the water vapour contents in the air. In the case of compressed air, it is referred to as the pressure dew point. If the pressure increases while the temperature remains constant, the dew point will be reached earlier. This means that – compared to a lower pressure – less water can be absorbed. Accordingly, a low dew point always indicates a low water content in the compressed air.

Sophisticated solutions

Industrial desiccant dehumidifiers are used for extracting moisture from compressed air. Trotec offers a number of dehumidification solutions for creating optimum humidity values in a production plant. Whether as a mobile model or for stationary use – the devices are durable, low-maintenance and flexibly configurable. The desiccant dehumidifiers from Trotec are also suited for heat recovery.

The TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers for continuous operation

The stationary TTR desiccant dehumidifiers from Trotec ensure constant humidity values, thus protecting the machines and installations against corrosion and harmful water vapour. The devices are “made in Germany” and “made by Trotec”, which means: professional quality meeting the highest demands in production. For stationary industrial applications dehumidifiers often have pipe connections and yet it must be possible to integrate them flexibly into existing process sequences. In this case, our devices can particularly score with their configurable air direction reversal. With the operator side always facing the user, the air flow direction can easily be adjusted as needed by means of a modular conversion. Blowing out dry air to the right and discharging humid air to the left – or the other way round – with the TTR desiccant dehumidifiers the air direction reversal can be carried out with minimal effort.

The mobile TTR desiccant dehumidifiers for flexible use

For a temporary use of true Trotec dehumidification performance, the mobile TTR desiccant dehumidifiers are particularly strong partners. The compact all-rounders are set up at the application site in next to no time and taken into operation at the push of a button. This guarantees pinpoint humidity regulation. Hand-held measuring devices such as thermohygrometers and data loggers like the innovative DL200X complete the dehumidification concept and so enable constant monitoring.

  • Environmental simulation climate chamber

In climatic chambers and wind tunnels three factors need to be simulated at the best possible rate: air temperature, wind strength and humidity. For the latter, the automotive industry needs dehumidifiers, which also perform well at dew points below 0°C, as well as high-performance desiccant dehumidifiers.

  • Drying hygroscopic bulk material

Varying and too high humidity values can ruin the pourability of powders and granules – and thus entail high consequential costs. In order for hygroscopic bulk material not to go lumpy nor to block hauling paths, the entire air in the chemical and pharmaceutical production must be pre-dried. Using adsorption dryers of the TTR series that's no problem.
